Neutrals are one of the cornerstones of my wardrobe. They’re classic, timeless and easy to style…important details in a well-edited working closet. As I was going through images pinned to my spring moodboard, I plucked out a few that stood out and sparked styling inspiration.
I’m the first to love an understated neutral story, but pairing with a less predictable color revitalizes the look. It’s a creative touch adding personality. Yellow and pink are the first to catch my eye and motivate a test drive. They are particularly effective when grounded with a dark tan neutral.
Inspiration in the wild. Weathered and faded surfaces at Angkor Wat, Cambodia and a marble bathroom countertop accented with a single pink rose at Villa d’Este, Italy.
A head to toe palette is always good. A favorite really. To avoid looking too reserved, I prefer silhouettes that speak to the moment and then style them with modern shoes and accessories.
Creating a tonal story with varying neutrals may mean letting go of some pre-conceived rules about sticking with one family of color. I think some of the most interesting outfits are achieved in this thread of styling. It’s more of a grab what you have theory and let it be.

I have a number of cream linen separates that get used throughout summer at home or away. I need to replace several of them this year due to stains from my favorite sunscreens. It’s a tradeoff. I got a tip in the comments on Mrs. Derm to wash the yellow stains with Dawn soap. I’ll report back.
Some neutrals can be tricky next to the face. They’re not always flattering. Adding ivory or white is a quick, effective brightener. The theory works for completed outfits too in any color story. An ivory bag makes everything look better.
